Skills or Credentials? Comparing the Perspectives of Degree- and Non-degree-holding Ghanaian Graduates on the Value of Higher Education

Abstract

This study examines how Ghanaian graduates understand the relationship between higher education and employment. It compares degree and non-degree holders, focusing on how they assess the skills gained through higher education and their expectations of the labour market. While non-degree holders rated their skills training more positively, degree holders expressed greater satisfaction with their educational achievements and more optimism about their employment prospects. Across both groups, graduates placed strong value on obtaining additional qualifications, suggesting that credentials are often viewed as particularly important for gaining access to employment.
