Microcredit–Nutrition Education Link: A Case Study Analysis of Ghanaian Women’s Experiences in Income Generation and Family Care

Abstract

This study examines the experiences of Ghanaian women who participated in the Enhancing Child Nutrition through Animal Source Food Management (ENAM) project. The programme combined microcredit and savings with entrepreneurship and nutrition education to strengthen women’s income-generating activities and improve their ability to provide nutritious foods for their families.

The qualitative study compared the experiences of women considered successful participants with those who experienced greater difficulties. Data were gathered through case studies, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and observations to understand the factors supporting success, the challenges women encountered and the strategies they used to overcome them.

The findings suggest that access to microcredit was one of the most important benefits of the programme, helping many participants strengthen their businesses. Previous business experience, commitment and hard work, family support, access to larger loans and good health were among the factors associated with successful participation. The study also indicates that linking microcredit with education had positive effects on women’s businesses, personal development and the wellbeing of their families.
