The Ghana Studies Association: Looking Ahead

Abstract

This article reflects on the future of the Ghana Studies Association at a moment marking both the twentieth anniversary of Ghana Studies and the thirtieth anniversary of the Association.

Drawing on discussions about the changing nature of Ghana Studies, the author argues that the future of the Association depends on creating stronger connections among scholars working in different geographical locations, academic disciplines and generations.

Particular attention is given to strengthening the participation of Ghana-based scholars, encouraging collaboration between scholars inside and outside Ghana, and broadening understandings of what constitutes Ghana Studies. The article also highlights the importance of mentoring and supporting younger scholars so that new generations can contribute to and sustain the field.

The article ultimately calls for a Ghana Studies Association that is meaningfully multilocal, multidisciplinary and multigenerational, while remaining engaged with questions about African-centred knowledge production and the future of African Studies.
